Abstract

The quality and health of corn seeds are one of the things to consider in order to obtain maximum yields. The efforts to maintain the quality and health of these seeds, namely by treating seeds or seed treatment. Bio-coating is a coating of seeds by adding bacteria that are used in the treatment of storing corn seeds. In making this bio-coating, bacteria undergo an inactive process during storage and will react to corn seeds planted on the growing media. B. subtilis is capable of forming endospores and can survive in an environment that is not good enough to do cryptobiosis. After the appropriate media is added, the spores will absorb water, swell, and stimulate the seeds to germinate. B. subtilis provides plant benefits in the form of phytohormone, auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, ethylene, and abscisic acid as a biocontrol through effective rhizosphere and rhizoplane colonization which inhibits harmful microorganisms by producing bactericidal bacteriocins. The factors that influence the optimization and reaction of B. subtilis as a bio-coating agent in storing corn seeds are storage at 35oC and pH range 6.
