Abstract

Gout arthritis is an auto-inflammatory disease found worldwide. Of 11 countries in Asia, Indonesia has the highest rate of gout arthritis. The body's metabolic factors are also included in the increased risk factors for the development of gout arthritis, including hypertension in people with hyperuricemia. There are a limited literature that conducts scientific studies on hypertension associated with the development of gout, especially in Indonesia. The community-based case-control research design was conducted in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi from 1 July to 31 August 2019. Participants were recruited using a cluster-sampling technique at seven community health centers in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between risk factors and gout risk. Participants with a systolic blood pressure of more than 131 mmHg had a 1.70-fold higher risk of gout arthritis compared than to participants with a systolic blood pressure of less than or equal to 131 mmHg after being adjusted for the covariates. Increased systolic blood pressure in hyperuricemia patients can increase the risk of gout arthritis. Controlling systolic blood pressure can be a strategy to reduce the risk of gout arthritis in individuals with hyperuricemia.
