Abstract

The rapid growth of coffee shop businesses in Kasihan District, Yogyakarta, has created both economic opportunities and sustainability challenges. However, previous studies have not integrated spatial analysis with macro-environmental (PESTEL) assessment to comprehensively evaluate the sustainability of MSMEs in this sector. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach combining Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial analysis and the PESTEL framework to examine the determinants of sustainable coffee shop development. Spatial data from Google Earth Pro (2019–2025) and official shapefiles from the Indonesian Geospatial Agency (2019) were analyzed to identify distribution patterns and land-use transformation. The results show that 36 out of 109 mapped coffee shops, representing 33 percent, were established on converted rice fields, indicating significant land-use change particularly in Tamantirto and Ngestiharjo Villages. The PESTEL analysis reveals that weak spatial regulation, rapid market expansion, and low environmental awareness are the main sustainability challenges. The study highlights the need for policy interventions that integrate spatial planning, environmental regulation, and MSME capacity building to ensure balanced economic growth and ecological preservation.
