THE ECONOMIC VALUE AND CONTRIBUTION OF NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS TO THE INCOME OF RURAL FOREST COMMUNITIES

Indonesia’s forest resources are extensive, covering approximately 9,623.1 thousand hectares and characterized by exceptionally high biodiversity. The utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) to meet daily household needs and as a source of income has long been practiced by local communities, particularly in community-managed forests. Agroforestry represents a viable land-use strategy for communities living around forest areas, enabling the sustainable utilization of NTFPs within an environment that supports tree growth and ecological balance. This study aims to estimate the economic value of NTFPs, examine their contribution to household income, and analyze the factors influencing income derived from NTFPs in Koripan Village, Matesih District, Karanganyar Regency. Purposive sampling was employed to select households actively utilizing NTFPs. From a population of 786 eligible households, 90 respondents were selected using the Slovin formula, followed by quota sampling to ensure equal representation across hamlets. Quantitative methods were applied, including economic valuation and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that the community utilizes 51 types of NTFPs, generating a total economic value of IDR 1,078,191,420 per year, with durian identified as the commodity with the highest economic potential. The contribution of NTFPs to household income averages IDR 12,201,794 per respondent per year, accounting for 33.60 percent of total household income. Regression analysis indicates that the number of household dependents and land area significantly affect NTFP income, while farmers’ age, education level, distance to forest resources, and number of cultivated plant species do not have a significant effect. These findings highlight the economic importance of NTFPs for rural livelihoods while emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to enhance their income-generating potential through improved land management and household-level strategies.
