Abstract

Seed priming is a pre-sowing treatment involving controlled hydration to enhance germination. One potential extract that can be used as a priming agent is fern (Davallia denticulata). This study aimed to determine the effect of different solvent types and extract concentrations on the germination of chili seeds (Capsicum annuum L.). The research was conducted using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors and three replications in August 2024 at the Teaching Laboratory 4, Department of Biology, Andalas University. The treatments consisted of solvent types: a1 (distilled water), a2 (methanol), a3 (ethanol), and a4 (butanol). The second factor was the concentration of squirrel’s foot fern extract: b0 (0 ml/L), b1 (25 ml/L), b2 (50 ml/L), and b3 (100 ml/L). The results showed that priming with different solvent types significantly affected germination rate, growth speed, vigor index, root length, and seedling fresh weight. Additionally, the fern extract concentration influenced germination rate, growth speed, vigor index, root length, and seedling dry weight.
